Philippine police secured a court warrant on Friday to examine electronic devices seized from the former Cebu home of Thomas MarkleโฏSr., the 82โyearโold father of the Duchess of Sussex. The warrant allows officers to inspect four boxes of material โ including computers, smartphones, hard drives and old videotapes โ that were handed over last week by Meghan Markleโs halfโbrother, ThomasโฏJr.
The seizure follows reports earlier this month that hundreds of images depicting child sexual abuse were found at the property and allegedly linked to ThomasโฏMarkleโฏSr. The former U.S. resident moved to the Philippines after a series of strokes and lived in Cebu until May before relocating to a rehabilitation centre in Florida, where he is learning to walk again after a leg amputation. He has repeatedly denied the allegations, calling them โsick lies.โ The duke and duchess have been estranged from him since 2018, and Meghan cut contact last year after receiving a letter from his first wife, RoslynโฏLoveless, that detailed the 2019 abuse claims.
Cebu Regional Prosecutor GraemeโฏElmido said ThomasโฏJr. was โadamantโ that the case be investigated, insisting his father โhas to answer for it.โ Loveless, who died in 2020, had previously sent the letter to the Metropolitan Police, a copy of which was shared with the Duke and Duchess at the time. Speaking to the Sun, ThomasโฏJr. apologised to Meghan for initially siding with his father and admitted he had โbeen protecting the wrong person for the past nine years.โ Police stress they must first determine how the material was obtained before any criminal charges can be considered, noting that Cebu is a known hotspot for childโexploitation offences and that authorities treat such allegations with utmost seriousness.
The investigation now moves to the forensic analysis of the seized devices, a step that could lead to formal charges if illegal content is confirmed. Meghan released a statement expressing deep distress and sympathy for any children harmed, reiterating why she has limited contact with her father and barred him from seeing her own children. The case adds another layer to the ongoing scrutiny of the royal familyโs private affairs and highlights the challenges of crossโborder childโabuse investigations.
