A UK High Court judge on Tuesday rejected a request by the producers of the realityโ€‘TV series โ€œThe Debโ€ to impose sanctions on actress Rebel Wilson, finding no basis for the claim that she committed fraud by lying under oath and tampering with evidence. The bid, filed in the ongoing defamation case that pits Wilson against a website that published a smear campaign alleging she fabricated her age and name, was dismissed without prejudice, meaning the underlying lawsuit can continue.

The decision comes after Wilsonโ€™s highโ€‘profile $4.5โ€ฏmillion victory against Bauer Media in 2022, where a jury concluded that the publisherโ€™s stories about her โ€œlying about her age and identityโ€ were false and damaging. The same falsehoods resurfaced on a littleโ€‘known website that reposted the Bauer articles and added further accusations that Wilson had falsified court testimony to win the earlier award. The producers of โ€œThe Debโ€ argue that Wilsonโ€™s alleged deception undermines the integrity of the court process and should be punished with a contempt sanction.

Judge Michael Havers, presiding over the case, said the evidence presented by the producers was โ€œinsufficient to establish that Ms.โ€ฏWilson knowingly misled the court.โ€ He noted that the allegations relied heavily on speculative links between Wilsonโ€™s statements and the websiteโ€™s content, without concrete proof of intentional fraud. In his ruling, Havers also warned that imposing sanctions without clear factual basis could set a dangerous precedent for future defamation disputes.

With the sanction request denied, Wilsonโ€™s legal team can focus on proving the websiteโ€™s claims are defamatory and seeking damages for reputational harm. The producers may still pursue a separate civil claim for alleged misuse of court procedures, but they will need to gather stronger evidence. Legal observers say the outcome underscores the high bar for proving fraud in defamation cases and highlights the ongoing battle celebrities face against online smear campaigns. The case is expected to resume later this year, with both sides preparing for a possible trial that could clarify the limits of free speech and falseโ€‘hood liability in the digital age.
