South African police arrested five men on Saturday for the brutal attack on 50โ€‘yearโ€‘old cattle farmer Donovan Marx, who was shot, stabbed and had his ears cut off during a house robbery on his farm in Ventersdorp, North West province, last Wednesday. Marx was ambushed as he returned home, dragged inside, tied up and tortured before the attackers fled with three guns and his van. He survived the assault but remains in hospital, where doctors say he may need prosthetic ears.

The assault comes amid a wave of violent crime that has plagued South Africa for years, especially in rural areas where farm owners are often targeted. Rightโ€‘wing groups have seized on such incidents to push the discredited claim of a โ€œwhite genocideโ€ on South African farms, a narrative rejected by all major political parties. The countryโ€™s latest crime statistics for Aprilโ€‘June 2026 show a rise in overall violence but do not single out farm robberies, and police data indicate most victims are black.

Police said a group of masked men approached a farm worker mowing the lawn, demanded Marxโ€™s whereabouts, and tied the worker with cable ties. When Marx arrived, two suspects shot him in the upper body, dragged him inside, bound him again and stabbed him before ransacking the house. The worker managed to free himself and call for help, prompting a rapid police response that led to the weekend arrests. Agriculture Minister Willie Aucamp condemned the โ€œsenseless and barbaricโ€ act, and Ian Cameron, chair of parliamentโ€™s police committee, praised the swift arrests while urging a thorough investigation.

The five suspects, aged 26 to 56, will appear in a local court on Tuesday on charges of house robbery, attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. Their appearance will test the policeโ€™s ability to deliver a strong, transparent case in a climate of public outrage. The incident has reignited debate over farm safety, the misuse of crime statistics by extremist groups, and South Africaโ€™s broader struggle with violent crime.
