A 21โ€‘yearโ€‘old Wisconsin state trooper was released on Friday after being taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on Thursday, a detention his lawyer called a โ€œdramatic experience.โ€ Carel Aaron Vanโ€ฏDerโ€ฏMerwe, who was traveling to see family in the Midwest, was stopped at a rest area near Madison and held for several hours before a federal judge ordered his release. Vanโ€ฏDerโ€ฏMerwe, originally from South Africa, has served with the Wisconsin State Patrol since last summer.

The incident has sparked debate over ICEโ€™s role in stopping lawful residents who work for state lawโ€‘enforcement agencies. ICE has intensified raids on undocumented individuals since the Biden administration lifted many Trumpโ€‘era restrictions, but critics say the agency is overreaching by targeting people who hold publicโ€‘safety jobs. State officials argue that the arrest could undermine trust between local police and federal authorities, especially as the state patrol relies on cooperation with federal partners for drug and borderโ€‘security operations. Legal experts note that while ICE can detain nonโ€‘citizens with pending removal proceedings, the lack of clear communication with state employers raises questions about due process and interโ€‘agency protocols.

Vanโ€ฏDerโ€ฏMerweโ€™s attorney, Marc Christopher, said his client was โ€œshocked and frightenedโ€ by the abrupt seizure and that the trooper had no criminal record or pending immigration case. The Wisconsin State Patrol issued a statement expressing โ€œdeep concernโ€ and pledged to review its procedures for notifying employees of federal actions. The trooperโ€™s union has announced it will file a grievance and consider legal action against ICE for what it calls an โ€œunwarranted intrusion.โ€ Federal officials have not yet commented on why Vanโ€ฏDerโ€ฏMerwe was flagged. The case is likely to prompt a review of ICEโ€™s coordination with state lawโ€‘enforcement agencies and could influence future policy discussions on immigration enforcement priorities.
