The UK meat industry has been hit by a cyber-attack that affected supermarket refrigerators and freezers across Europe on Monday. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) reported that some UK businesses in the food supply chain experienced disruptions due to vulnerabilities exploited during the attack. This incident marks a troubling escalation in cyber threats targeting essential services.
The timing of this attack follows a series of similar breaches that targeted supermarkets and food suppliers in France earlier this month. These recent incidents have raised alarms about the security of technology used in the food industry. The NCSC's chief executive, Dr. Richard Horne, stated that they worked overnight to alert potentially affected organizations. The British Association of Independent Meat Suppliers (AIMS) confirmed that several of its more than 300 members found themselves affected by the hacks, which disrupted their operations.
Reports indicated that some members of AIMS experienced significant temperature increases in their refrigeration units, with one instance reaching 100C (212F). Fortunately, these devices were empty at the time, preventing any loss of produce. AIMS spokesman Tony Goodger emphasized the need for vigilance within the food industry, stating that all businesses in the supply chain must recognize they could be targeted by cybercriminals.
The NCSC's ongoing investigation has yet to determine the perpetrators of this cyber-attack. Dr. Horne warned that outdated technology and unpatched systems create vulnerabilities that hackers can easily exploit. He stressed the importance of investment in modern security measures, urging organizations to assess their technology and take necessary steps to secure it. The recent incidents serve as a stark reminder of the pressing need for robust cybersecurity across critical infrastructure, particularly in sectors as vital as food supply.
