A recent test of Google Maps on Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in a 2025 Kia Sonet found that the Android platform delivers a smoother navigation experience. The tester ran identical searches and route changes on both systems, using the same infotainment screen. While both platforms offered speedometers, lane guidance, incident alerts, and alternativeโroute suggestions, the differences became clear when the app was used for more than just basic directions.
The most noticeable advantage for Android Auto was the Gemini voice assistant. The tester could summon Gemini with a voice command without touching the screen, and it handled conversational searches and followโups instantly. On CarPlay, a Gemini button appeared, but it required a tap and could not be invoked handsโfree. When the tester asked for a fuel stop, then a pharmacy, and finally alternative routes, Gemini on Android Auto displayed the options immediately. On CarPlay, the same sequence was slower and required the user to reopen the conversation. Gemini sometimes stalled, but the handsโfree capability still mattered when the display is in the middle of the dashboard.
When looking for places along a route, Android Auto again led. The app listed multiple options with ratings and the extra time each stop would add, making it easy to compare a oneโminute detour against a sixโminute one. CarPlay showed results one at a time, with Previous and Next buttons to scroll. It still offered gas prices and detour times, but the user had to tap through each option, which was more effort. The ability to see several stops side by side saved time and reduced the need for detective work.
Map interaction also favored Android Auto. Zoom controls remained within easy reach, and pinchโtoโzoom worked directly on the screen. On CarPlay, the interface was less responsive, and users had to tap separate buttons to zoom. Overall, the test showed that while both platforms provide core navigation features, Android Auto offers a more integrated and efficient experience for everyday tasks, from voiceโactivated searches to route planning and map interaction.
