Sen. Bernie Sanders and other Democrats called for a pause on new data‑center construction after the party’s sweeping victory in the U.S. midterm elections on Tuesday. In a post on X, Sanders urged a “national data center moratorium now,” warning that big tech could damage the environment, cut jobs and threaten the future. The message was echoed by Rep. Yassamin Ansari, who said that halting AI development should be the House’s top priority on Day 1, and by Rep. Greg Casar, who added “Yes!” in support.

The push comes after voters in several localities voted to restrict data‑center growth. A CNBC voter poll found that 56 % of voters said AI and data centers were a major factor in their ballot decision, and 65 % of those voters supported a Democratic candidate for Congress. The election results rattled tech stocks: the iShares Semiconductor ETF fell nearly 9 % on Tuesday, Nvidia dropped 8 %, and AMD fell more than 14 %. Chip stocks led the decline as investors worried that Democratic wins could translate into real policy changes.

Democratic winners used data‑center criticism to win key races. In South Carolina, newly elected Senator Annie Andrews branded her opponent a “data center Darline” and said voters chose a state where local people, not billionaires, decide community futures. Ohio’s Sherrod Brown said he does not work for data centers. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who had already signed an executive order to slow data‑center development, said residents should have the final say. Texas, which hosts 27 % of planned data‑center capacity, saw Democrat Gina Hinojosa win the governorship, though she did not speak directly about data centers in her victory speech.

If the new Democratic majority follows the calls, the next step could be a federal moratorium or stricter regulations on data‑center construction. Such a policy would affect the tech supply chain and the energy grid, as data‑center developers often rely on cheap, renewable power. The debate over data‑center growth highlights a broader clash between rapid tech expansion and local community control, a theme that will shape the next congressional session.
