Elon Musk said Tesla will start delivering its Optimus humanoid robot to customers by the end of 2027, marking the first commercial rollout of the companyโs longโpromised robot. The announcement came during a livestream of Teslaโs AI Day in Austin, where Musk outlined the timeline and said early buyers could expect the first units in late 2027.
Optimus is the centerpiece of Teslaโs push into robotics, a move that began in 2021 when the company unveiled a prototype that could walk, lift objects and respond to simple commands. The robot is intended to handle repetitive, physically demanding work in factories, warehouses and even homes. If successful, it could open a new revenue stream for Tesla, which has already generated billions from electric cars and energy products. The market for service robots is projected to reach tens of billions of dollars in the next decade, and rivals such as Boston Dynamics and Hyundai are also racing to commercialize similar machines.
The new timeline follows a series of recent milestones. In 2024 Tesla demonstrated a more refined Optimus that could navigate stairs, carry a 20โkilogram load and perform basic assembly tasks. The company has also begun integrating its own AI chips, which it claims give Optimus an edge in perception and decisionโmaking. Analysts at Morgan Stanley raised their price target for Tesla, noting that a robot business could add up to $5โฏbillion in annual revenue once scaled. Labor groups, however, warned that widespread adoption could pressure lowโskill workers, and regulators are expected to scrutinize safety standards before the robot reaches consumers.
Tesla says it will open a pilot production line in early 2026 to fineโtune manufacturing processes and test the robot in realโworld settings. The company plans to certify the units with safety agencies and offer a subscriptionโbased service for maintenance and software updates. If the 2027 delivery goal holds, Optimus could reshape how companies approach manual labor and give Tesla a foothold in a market that has so far been dominated by specialist robotics firms. The next few years will reveal whether the robot can move beyond the prototype stage to become a viable commercial product.
