Strava rolled out a suite of routeโplanning upgrades on Tuesday, announcing smarter search, offline map access and new discovery tools for runs, hikes and rides. The features debuted during a live webcast streamed from the companyโs San Francisco office and will be rolled out to all users over the next few weeks. Strava says the changes let athletes find routes faster, filter by distance, elevation or surface, and download maps for use without a data connection.
The upgrade comes as fitnessโtracking apps face growing pressure to keep users engaged. Stravaโs community has swelled to more than 120โฏmillion members, many of whom rely on the platform to explore new trails and avoid crowded paths. Earlier this year, user surveys highlighted frustration with slow search results and the inability to plan routes in areas with poor cellular coverage. Competitors such as AllTrails and Komoot have already offered offline maps and AIโdriven suggestions, prompting Strava to accelerate its own roadmap.
The new tools include a โSmart Searchโ bar that ranks routes based on the userโs past activity and preferred terrain, and a filter that shows only routes with a specified elevation gain or surface type. Offline maps can be saved for up to 30โฏdays, allowing athletes to navigate remote trails without a phone signal. Strava also added a โNearby Highlightsโ panel that surfaces popular segments within a fiveโkilometre radius. Early testers praised the speed of the search and the reliability of offline navigation. Stravaโs CEO, Michael Horvath, said the updates are โa direct response to what our community asked for.โ The company will monitor usage data and roll out further refinements in a summer update, aiming to cement its position as the goโto platform for outdoor exercise planning.
