The U.S. government released a new batch of declassified files on Tuesday that include three eyewitness accounts of a black triangular craft performing maneuvers that defy known physics. The sightings were recorded between February and April 2024 by military pilots and civilian radar operators over the Nevada desert and the Atlantic seaboard. Scientific American highlighted the reports, noting that the craft hovered, accelerated instantly and changed direction without visible propulsion. The documents were part of the Pentagonโ€™s ongoing Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) disclosure effort.

The release comes after years of pressure from Congress and the public to make more information about UAPs public. In 2020 the Pentagon issued its first formal report on the phenomenon, and in 2022 it created the Allโ€‘Domain Anomaly Resolution Office to coordinate investigations. The new files are the latest in a series of disclosures meant to improve transparency and to assess any potential threat to national security. Blackโ€‘triangle sightings have long been considered among the most credible because they are often reported by trained observers, making this addition especially noteworthy.

The three reports describe a silent, matteโ€‘black object about 30 feet across that rose from the ground, hovered for several seconds, then shot upward at a speed that outpaced the fastest fighter jets. No engine noise or exhaust plume was observed. The pilots filed formal incident reports, and the radar logs show a sudden loss of return that later reappeared at a different altitude. Defense officials said the data will be reviewed by AARO analysts, while aerospace experts called for more rigorous scientific scrutiny. Skeptics warned that sensor glitches could explain the anomalies, but the consistency of the eyewitness accounts has raised concern.

The Pentagon says the investigation will continue over the next six months, with a briefing planned for the House Armed Services Committee in early 2025. Officials hope the analysis will clarify whether the craft represents a foreign technology, a domestic experimental platform, or something else entirely. The outcome could shape future policy on airspace monitoring and influence how the government handles similar reports in the future.
