SpaceX's share price fell more than 13 percent on Wednesday, closing at $108.10. This decline followed the company's first quarterly earnings report since going public. The stock had previously closed at $125.33 on Tuesday, marking a significant drop in value in just one day.

The plunge in stock price comes amid rising concerns over SpaceX's escalating capital expenditures, which surged to $18.37 billion. This figure is six times greater than last yearโ€™s expenditure and exceeds analysts' expectations of $13.2 billion. A substantial portion of this investment, $15.8 billion, is allocated for artificial intelligence infrastructure. SpaceX aims to enhance its data center capacity from 1.4 gigawatts to 2 gigawatts by the end of the year, a move that has left investors questioning the potential returns from such a hefty outlay.

Investor skepticism reflects a broader trend in the technology sector, where companies are under scrutiny for significant investments without clear, immediate benefits. Josh Gilbert, an analyst at eToro, highlighted that SpaceX faces unique challenges in justifying its spending, especially since it is asking shareholders to support data centers in orbit. Despite the uncertainty, SpaceX has secured $14.1 billion in cloud-service agreements, indicating that the investment may pay off in the long run.

Looking ahead, SpaceX's stock may experience further volatility. On Thursday, a significant portion of the post-IPO lock-up period will end, allowing about 911.5 million sharesโ€”approximately 20 percent of restricted holdingsโ€”to be sold. Melissa Otto of S&P Global noted that the stock is likely to fluctuate as shareholders react to the news. Since its IPO was priced at $135 per share and briefly surged to $225, the current dip has put additional pressure on Musk and the company as they navigate this uncertain financial landscape.
