Bank of America is spending over $250 million annually to cover GLP-1 weight loss drugs for its employees, according to CEO Brian Moynihan. In an interview with CNBC on Wednesday, he highlighted this expenditure as a strategic investment in the health of the bank's workforce, which consists of approximately 211,000 employees.

The rising costs of GLP-1 medications, including popular options like Ozempic and Wegovy, have become a significant concern for employers nationwide. Many have faced increased demand for these treatments, which can run into thousands of dollars per patient each year. Moynihan noted that Bank of America allocates more than $2 billion annually on healthcare overall, with GLP-1 drugs now representing about 13% of that total spending. This increase marks a notable shift, as expenditures for these medications were virtually non-existent just a few years ago.

Moynihan acknowledged that while some employees may leave before the bank sees long-term savings from improved health, the company believes providing access to these drugs is crucial. Bank of America pairs the medications with health coaching, aiming to support employees in making sustainable lifestyle changes. Recent clinical data suggests that these drugs could not only aid in weight loss but also reduce the risk of cardiovascular issues, further justifying the investment.

Additionally, Bank of America is leveraging its size to negotiate better prices with drug manufacturers and pharmacy benefit managers. Moynihan emphasized the bank's commitment to securing the best possible pricing, stating, โ€œBelieve me, we're pounding everybody on price.โ€ He concluded that the potential long-term and short-term health benefits make this investment worthwhile for the bank and its employees.
