Port of New Orleans tests AI to cut cargo costs by 8%

The Port of New Orleans is testing AI to optimize oversize cargo handling, aiming to cut crane use by 15% and costs by 8% in a year. If successful, this could set a model for other ports to improve eโ€ฆ

The Port of Newโ€ฏOrleans has teamed up with UTCโ€ฏTransoceanic and the Newโ€ฏOrleans Public Belt Railroad to pilot an artificialโ€‘intelligence system that will manage the handling of oversize cargo. The collaboration, announced on Tuesday, aims to use machineโ€‘learning algorithms to optimise crane schedules, track container locations in real time and reduce the time ships spend in berth.

Port logistics have become a highโ€‘stakes game as global trade grows faster than infrastructure can keep up. Oversize cargoโ€”such as windโ€‘farm turbines, automotive parts and heavy machineryโ€”accounts for roughly 12โ€ฏ% of the portโ€™s container traffic, and it is notoriously difficult to move safely and efficiently. Traditional methods rely on manual planning and static spreadsheets, which can lead to delays, costly reโ€‘routing and safety incidents. By feeding sensor data, weather feeds and shipโ€‘arrival schedules into a neural network, the system can predict bottlenecks and suggest optimal lift sequences, potentially shaving hours off turnaround times.

UTCโ€™s chief operations officer said the pilot will test the AIโ€™s ability to reduce crane utilisation by up to 15โ€ฏ% and cut cargoโ€‘handling costs by 8โ€ฏ% over a 12โ€‘month period. The Port Authorityโ€™s director of logistics added that the project will also improve safety metrics, as the system flags highโ€‘risk lift scenarios before they happen. Early trials on a 30โ€‘meter crane already show a 20โ€ฏ% reduction in idle time, according to a preliminary internal report.

If the pilot proves successful, the port plans to roll out the platform across all berths and integrate it with the regional rail network. The initiative could set a precedent for other U.S. ports grappling with complex supply chains, and it may prompt regulators to update safety standards to accommodate AIโ€‘driven operations. As shipping volumes rise and the demand for faster, greener logistics grows, the partnership marks a significant step toward a smarter, more resilient maritime hub.
