Rivian's R2 SUV becomes best-seller, boosts revenue by 38%
Rivian's R2 electric SUV became its best-selling vehicle in Q3 2026, accounting for 42% of total shipments and contributing to a 38% revenue increase to $2.155 billion. This shift is crucial for Riviโฆ
Rivian said its newly launched R2 electric SUV became the companyโs bestโselling vehicle in the third quarter of 2026, overtaking the R1T pickup and R1S crossover for the first time. The automaker reported $2.155โฏbillion in revenue for the quarter, a 38โฏpercent jump from the same period a year earlier, and said the R2 accounted for roughly 42โฏpercent of total vehicle shipments.
The milestone matters because Rivian has been racing to prove it can move beyond niche luxury trucks and reach massโmarket volumes. The R2, priced around $45,000, is built on the same platform as the R1 models but uses a smaller battery pack and a streamlined interior to cut costs. Production began in the Normal, Illinois plant in early 2026 after the company reโtooled the line originally meant for the R1 series. The move follows years of cash burn, a $2.5โฏbillion financing round in 2023, and a partnership with Amazon that secured a $2.5โฏbillion order for delivery vans but left the company dependent on a single highโprice product line. By offering a more affordable EV, Rivian aims to capture buyers drifting toward the Tesla ModelโฏY and Ford MustangโฏMachโE, and to improve its cashโflow outlook.
Analysts noted the revenue surge and the R2โs market share as signs that Rivianโs costโreduction strategy is working. CEO RJ Scaringe said the company will boost R2 output to 150,000 units in 2027 and expand the modelโs global footprint to Europe and China by 2028. Rivian also announced plans to open a second assembly line in Georgia later this year, which could lift total annual production capacity to 300,000 vehicles. Investors responded positively, with the stock gaining 7โฏpercent after the earnings release. If the R2 continues to outpace its rivals, Rivian could finally achieve the scale needed to turn its earlyโstage losses into sustainable profitability.
