Chancellor John Healey has indicated that younger workers may not receive the same minimum wage as their older counterparts before the next election, potentially undermining a key Labour manifesto promise. During an interview scheduled to air on Sunday, Healey suggested that the plan to eliminate the pay gap between adult workers and those aged 18 to 20 could be delayed, despite previous commitments made in 2024 to remove "discriminatory age bands."

The Labour Party had pledged to ensure that all workers receive equal pay, irrespective of age. However, Healey's comments come on the heels of last week's Budget announcement, which confirmed that the minimum wage for 18 to 20-year-olds would rise to ยฃ11.27 in 2026, while workers over 20 would earn at least ยฃ13.21. This disparity leaves a significant gap in pay for younger workers, contrary to Labour's stated goals.

Healey's remarks are likely to provoke backlash from unions and left-leaning party members. He emphasized that while Labour remains committed to equalizing wages, the timeline for implementation is uncertain. His reasoning centers on the need to encourage businesses to hire younger workers, highlighting the "moral shame" of youth unemployment in the UK. Healey noted, "There is no question about whether or if, it's a question of when - it's a question of how fast," reflecting the complexities of balancing job creation with wage equality.

Additionally, Healey suggested the government may pursue significant cuts to public spending to address the country's debt situation. Although the Institute for Fiscal Studies has questioned the feasibility of these cuts, Healey affirmed the government's readiness to make difficult decisions regarding budget priorities. As discussions around wage policy and public spending continue, the government's approach to supporting young workers will be closely watched in the lead-up to the next election.
