Jeff Bezos is selling up to $4 billion worth of Amazon stock, according to recent SEC filings. The founder and executive chairman of Amazon filed documents indicating he sold 1.2 million shares last week. He has the option to sell up to 15 million shares in total, which, if sold at current market prices, would net him a substantial amount of cash.

Bezosโ€™ decision to sell shares comes as Amazon reports strong second-quarter results, showcasing growth in both its retail and cloud computing sectors. The company's retail operations saw a 16% year-over-year revenue increase, aided by the shift of Prime Day to the second quarter. However, significant capital investments in Amazon Web Services (AWS) have put pressure on the company's free cash flow, pushing it into negative territory over the past year.

The sale is part of a prearranged Rule 10b5-1 trading plan established by Bezos last year. Such plans are designed to prevent insider trading and are typically set up well in advance of stock sales. This means that Bezos is not acting on any perceived weaknesses in Amazon's stock or future prospects. In fact, AWS continues to thrive, with revenue accelerating for the fifth consecutive quarter, climbing 37% year over year and expanding its operating margin to 39.4%.

Investors may wonder whether they should follow Bezos' lead and lighten their stakes in Amazon. Despite the stock sale, analysts suggest that Amazon remains a strong investment, bolstered by robust revenue growth and a significant backlog of $496 billion as of the end of the second quarter. As the company continues to invest in its cloud infrastructure and capitalize on its advertising and Prime membership growth, its long-term outlook appears promising.
