Samsung announced on Tuesday that its latest Galaxy phones now include an upgraded documentโ€‘scanner feature built directly into the Camera app, and the change is already saving users time and hassle. The new scanner, rolled out with the One UIโ€ฏ6.1 update for the Galaxyโ€ฏS23 series, S24 and the latest Note models, automatically detects paper, crops edges, straightens the image and runs opticalโ€‘characterโ€‘recognition (OCR) without needing a thirdโ€‘party app. Users can instantly share PDFs to email, cloud storage or messaging apps, and the feature works offline. Samsung says the enhancement reduces the steps needed to digitise a receipt, contract or form from several taps to a single swipe.

The upgrade comes at a moment when more people are handling paperwork on mobile devices than ever before. The pandemic pushed remote work and online education into the mainstream, creating a surge in demand for quick, reliable ways to capture documents on the go. Until now, many Android users relied on separate scanning apps that often struggled with lowโ€‘light conditions, uneven edges or inaccurate text extraction. Competitors such as Appleโ€™s iPhone have long offered a native scan function, putting pressure on Samsung to close the gap and keep its large Galaxy user base from turning to other solutions.

Samsung claims the new scanner is up to 30โ€ฏpercent faster than its previous version and that OCR accuracy now reaches 98โ€ฏpercent, according to internal testing. Early reviewers have praised the automatic perspective correction and the ability to export directly to Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive and Dropbox. The feature is enabled on devices running Androidโ€ฏ14 or later, and Samsung plans to extend it to midโ€‘range Galaxy A models later this year. Analysts expect the move to strengthen Samsungโ€™s ecosystem, encouraging users to keep more of their workflow within Samsungโ€™s software suite. As the update spreads, the convenience of turning any Galaxy phone into a reliable scanner could further reduce the need for dedicated hardware, especially for small businesses and freelancers.
