French authorities have confirmed that recent cyber-attacks have compromised medical fridge systems used to store blood donations. The French Blood Establishment (EFS) reported that temperature controls in cold rooms storing blood were affected, but quick action by staff ensured the safety of the blood supplies. No health risks or loss of blood products have been reported, easing initial concerns about the impact of these hacks.

This incident follows a wave of cyber-attacks that have primarily targeted European supermarkets. Speculation has circulated that Russian hacktivist groups may be involved, with organizations like Noname057(16) and Z-Pentest Alliance claiming responsibility for hacking Danfoss, a company linked to the affected systems. However, cyber-security experts warn that attributing the attacks solely to Russian groups is premature, as other actors, including Iranian hackers or even inexperienced individuals, could also be responsible.

Cyber-security researchers are actively investigating the attacks using digital decoys, known as "honeypots," to lure hackers and study their methods without risking actual systems. These traps help experts analyze the tactics used in the freezer hacks, which appear to be highly coordinated. Ryan Dewhurst, from Spanish cyber-security company Previdian, noted that the simultaneous nature of the attacks indicates careful planning. Many of the affected systems had poor security, making them easy targets. The attackers likely gathered information about the devices' public IP addresses to create a focused target list.

As investigations continue, the urgency to bolster cybersecurity in critical infrastructure is underscored. The fact that medical storage units are now being targeted highlights vulnerabilities that could have far-reaching implications for public health. Authorities are working to enhance protections for these systems, recognizing that the stakes are high when it comes to safeguarding vital medical supplies.
