Scientists studying the Dog Aging Project have found that the same small molecules in dog blood that signal a longer or shorter life are also seen in human blood. The discovery shows that dogs and people share a common metabolic roadmap for ageing. Researchers analysed blood samples from thousands of dogs of different breeds and ages and matched the patterns to how long each dog lived.

The work comes as pet owners increasingly view dogs as family members and as a growing interest in using companion animals to study human diseases. Dogs age at a pace that mirrors many human conditions, making them a useful model for ageing research. By comparing dogs and humans, scientists hope to uncover universal clues that could point to new ways to slow the ageing process.

The metabolic fingerprints identified involve molecules linked to energy use, inflammation and cellular stress. In the study, dogs with a โ€œhealthyโ€ profile of these molecules lived on average 5 to 7 years longer than dogs with a โ€œtoxicโ€ profile. The researchers also noted that the same markers predict lifespan in humans, suggesting a shared biology. The team plans to track more dogs over time to refine the predictive power of the biomarkers.

If the findings hold up, they could help design drugs that target the same pathways in humans. The data also give pet owners a tool to monitor their dogsโ€™ health. Future studies will test whether interventions that improve these metabolic markers actually extend life in both species, offering a promising avenue for extending healthy years in humans and their canine companions.
