Coinbase earnings: Wall Street divided on trading rebound after Robinhood crypto revenue sinks 55%

Coinbase posted its secondโ€‘quarter results on Tuesday, showing a modest earnings beat but sparking a split among analysts over whether a trading rebound is realistic after Robinhoodโ€™s crypto revenue plunged 55% in the same period. The exchangeโ€™s shares rose 3.2% in afterโ€‘hours trading, while Robinhoodโ€™s stock fell 6.8% on the news.

The split comes as the broader crypto market struggles to regain momentum after a year of falling prices, higher interest rates and tighter regulation. Bitcoin and ether have both stayed below their 2023 peaks, squeezing transaction volumes across the sector. Coinbase, the worldโ€™s largest crypto broker, depends heavily on retail and institutional trading fees, so any sustained dip in market activity directly hits its bottom line. Robinhood, which added a crypto offering in 2018 and grew rapidly during the 2020โ€‘2021 rally, has seen user interest wane as investors shift to higherโ€‘yield alternatives and as the platform grapples with compliance scrutiny from the SEC.

In the quarter, Coinbase reported revenue of $2.1โ€ฏbillion, up 6% from a year earlier, and net income of $650โ€ฏmillion, beating consensus estimates. Daily active users rose 8% to 21โ€ฏmillion, and trading volume increased 12% on a yearโ€‘overโ€‘year basis. However, the growth was driven more by higher fees on stablecoin transactions than by a broad resurgence in spot trading. Robinhoodโ€™s crypto division generated $120โ€ฏmillion in revenue, down from $268โ€ฏmillion a year ago, prompting analysts at Morgan Stanley to downgrade its outlook, while JPMorganโ€™s team argued that the dip could be temporary if market volatility returns. The divergent views pushed Coinbaseโ€™s priceโ€‘toโ€‘sales multiple to 7.5ร—, a level still below its 2021 peak, and left investors watching for signs of a sustained bounce.

Looking ahead, both firms will need to navigate a regulatory landscape that is still evolving, especially around stablecoins and custodial services. Coinbase has signaled plans to expand its institutional offerings and launch new derivatives, moves that could lift trading volumes if market sentiment improves. Robinhood, meanwhile, is courting highโ€‘frequency traders and exploring DeFi integrations to revive its crypto line. Analysts will be watching the next earnings season closely, as a clearer picture of user behavior and fee structures could settle the current split in Wall Streetโ€™s expectations.
