Billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman has made a significant investment in Microsoft, acquiring a stake worth $2.1 billion earlier this year. His firm, Pershing Square Capital Management, disclosed the purchase of 5.7 million shares in its first-quarter 13F filing released in May. This move positioned Microsoft as Ackman's fourth-largest holding, accounting for 15.2% of his portfolio.

Ackman's decision to invest came at a time when Microsoftโ€™s stock was undervalued, trading at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 21, the lowest level since 2017. This valuation was approximately 32% below its historical average P/E ratio of 31. Microsoft has been viewed as a solid long-term investment due to its strong position in enterprise technology, particularly with its M365 and Azure platforms, which contribute around 70% of its profits. The recent downturn in the stock was largely attributed to concerns over increased spending on AI and potential disruptions in the cloud market.

Since Microsoft reported its fiscal Q4 earnings on July 29, the company's stock price has surged by 25%, jumping from $390 to $488 per share within a week. This increase followed a successful earnings report showing an 18% rise in revenue and a 32% rise in earnings for the quarter ending June 30. Investors had been anxious about AI spending and exclusive partnerships, but these worries diminished as Microsoft showcased its cloud growth and restructured its deal with OpenAI to no longer be exclusive.

Looking ahead, analysts are optimistic about Microsoftโ€™s future performance. The companyโ€™s projected acceleration in cloud growth for the second half of the year, along with the positive earnings results, could indicate that Ackmanโ€™s investment may pay off. As investors continue to evaluate the tech giant's growth potential, questions remain about whether Microsoft is still a buy at its current price.
