The Australian stock market is trimming its early gains on Thursday, recovering some losses from the previous two sessions. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index has gained 32.30 points, or 0.39 percent, reaching 8,273.00 after peaking near the 8,300 mark. The All Ordinaries Index is also up, gaining 35.50 points or 0.42 percent to 8,512.80. This movement follows mixed signals from Wall Street overnight, leading to fluctuations in various sectors.

Investors are reacting to recent performance trends, particularly in mining and energy stocks, which have shown resilience. Major miners like Rio Tinto and Fortescue Metals have increased by nearly 1 percent, while BHP Group is up 0.4 percent. Oil stocks are similarly performing well, with Origin Energy gaining over 1 percent. In contrast, the technology sector is facing challenges, with companies like Zip and WiseTech Global reporting declines of more than 4 percent and 2 percent, respectively.

Other notable market movements include Eagers Automotive, whose shares have surged over 20 percent after announcing it outperformed expectations despite a drop in profits. Ramsay Health Care shares jumped nearly 13 percent following news of potential strategic changes, while Medibank reported a rise in interim profits, leading to an almost 11 percent share increase. Conversely, IDP Education saw a significant drop of nearly 11 percent as it faced a 40 percent decline in earnings due to a shrinking international student market.

On the economic front, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported a 0.2 percent decrease in new capital expenditure for the fourth quarter of 2024, totaling A$43.961 billion. This figure fell short of forecasts that anticipated a 0.6 percent rise, following a stronger 1.1 percent gain in the previous quarter. These economic indicators could influence market sentiment in the coming weeks, especially as investors gauge the broader implications for growth and spending in Australia.
