Apple unveiled its latest MacBook Pro on Tuesday at its Cupertino campus, announcing a laptop that combines an OLED screen with a new PROLED XDR display and a touchโ€‘enabled surface. The device is aimed at colorโ€‘critical professionals such as photographers, video editors and graphic designers. It will ship in the United States and several other markets starting in early November.

The upgrade matters because Appleโ€™s previous MacBook Pros used a Retina LCD that, while sharp, fell short of the color fidelity demanded by highโ€‘end creators. Competing Windows laptops have offered OLED panels for years, but Apple has kept a glossy LCD to preserve battery life and cost. Growing pressure from the mediaโ€‘production industry and the rise of 4K and HDR content pushed Apple to adopt a display that can hit a wider color gamut and deeper blacks. The company also added a touch layer, a first for its pro laptops, to let users interact directly with colorโ€‘grading software and design tools.

The new MacBook Pro features a 14โ€‘inch and a 16โ€‘inch model, both with a 600โ€‘nits sustained brightness and a peak of 1,600 nits for HDR highlights. Apple claims the PROLED XDR panel covers 100โ€ฏ% of the DCIโ€‘P3 color space and can be calibrated to a deltaโ€‘E of less than 1, a level usually reserved for dedicated reference monitors. Independent testers at The Verge measured a 0.5โ€ฏฮ”E after factory calibration, confirming Appleโ€™s claim. The touch surface supports Apple Pencil input, allowing precise adjustments in apps like DaVinci Resolve and Adobe Photoshop. Prices start at $2,499 for the 14โ€‘inch model and $3,199 for the 16โ€‘inch, with higherโ€‘end configurations costing up to $5,000.

Industry analysts say the move could shift the market for professional displays, forcing rivals to improve their own panels or risk losing creative customers. Apple will begin shipping the laptops on November 6, and it plans to roll out a suite of software updates to integrate touch controls more tightly. If the hardware lives up to the early reviews, color professionals may finally have a single machine that handles editing, grading and final output without needing a separate reference monitor.
