Google has rolled out Android 17 QPR3 Betaโฏ3 on Tuesday, bringing back the longโawaited appโlock feature and fixing dozens of bugs that plagued earlier builds. The update, available through the Android Open Source Project and the Play Store for registered developers, also adds new controls for app bubbles, Quick Settings and other system UI elements. It arrives ahead of the final Androidโฏ14 release scheduled for later this year.
The beta is the third quarterly platform release (QPR) for Androidโฏ14, a cadence Google introduced to give developers more frequent, stable snapshots before the full launch. Early QPRโฏ3 betas removed app lock after compatibility issues surfaced, prompting complaints from users who rely on the feature for privacy. Googleโs engineering teams took the feedback, reโengineered the lock API and reโintegrated it for this build. The move reflects a broader push to tighten security and user control as Android continues to dominate the global smartphone market.
Betaโฏ3 also expands bubble functionality, letting users pin conversations to the screen with new size and position options, and refines Quick Settings tiles with customizable toggles for WiโFi, Bluetooth and battery saver. Google lists more than 60 bug fixes, including a crash on devices with lowโend RAM, a camera shutter delay on Pixelโฏ8, and a networking glitch that caused intermittent WiโFi drops on some Samsung models. Performance metrics show a 5โฏpercent reduction in average app launch time and a modest batteryโlife gain of up to three hours on test devices. The update also patches two critical CVEs that could be exploited to bypass device encryption.
Developers are encouraged to install the beta, run compatibility tests and report any regressions through the Android Issue Tracker before the final Androidโฏ14 rollout, expected in October. Users who opt into the beta on compatible phones will see the appโlock toggle reappear in Settings, along with the new bubble and Quick Settings options. As Google refines the platform, the changes in QPR3 Betaโฏ3 aim to smooth the transition to Androidโฏ14, delivering a more secure, customizable experience for the millions of devices that will soon receive the update.
