A report from the Wall Street Journal suggesting that Tesla might sell or shut down its operations in China has sparked concern among analysts. While Tesla has denied any plans to exit the Chinese market, analysts like Tom Narayan from RBC Capital Markets believe such a move would be detrimental to the company. Narayan argues that if Tesla were forced to sell its China operations, it would likely not fetch its true value, particularly with potential future revenue from humanoids and robotaxis lost in the transaction.

Tesla's presence in China is crucial. The country is its second-largest revenue source, contributing approximately $9 billion this year, which is about 20% of the company's total revenues. Moreover, Tesla's Gigafactory in Shanghai stands as its largest manufacturing hub, with an annual capacity exceeding 950,000 vehicles. This facility not only produces the Model 3 and Model Y but is also significant as it was Teslaโ€™s first factory outside the U.S. and the first wholly foreign-owned automobile plant in China. Any cessation of operations there would have substantial repercussions for Tesla's bottom line.

The timing of this news is particularly sensitive, as Tesla has recently seen a resurgence in the Chinese electric vehicle market. In May 2023, the company delivered nearly 86,000 vehicles, marking an 8.2% rise from April and a remarkable 39.4% increase compared to the same month last year. This growth follows a six-month trend of increasing deliveries, underscoring the importance of the Chinese market for Teslaโ€™s ongoing recovery.

Tesla's operations in China extend beyond vehicle production. The Shanghai facility also hosts a Megafactory that produces large-scale battery systems, bolstering Tesla's energy segment. With over 400 suppliers in China, many of which export components globally, the country plays a pivotal role in Tesla's supply chain. As the situation develops, the implications of any decision regarding Tesla's China business could reshape the company's future and its standing in the rapidly evolving global EV market.
