Zimbabwe tycoon Chivayo dies in Harare helicopter crash
Zimbabwean tycoon Wicknell Chivayo and five others died in a helicopter crash near Harare. His death removes a key ally of President Mnangagwa, potentially disrupting political alliances and rural deโฆ
Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife Lucy Muteke were killed in a helicopter crash southeast of Harare on Wednesday evening. The aircraft went down in the rural Marondera district, not far from the capital, and the six people on board died with no survivors. The crash was confirmed by the family and reported by state media.
Chivayo was a wellโknown supporter of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, having secured a series of lucrative government contracts. He was famous for his extravagant lifestyle, luxury cars, designer clothes, and for giving lavish gifts to business partners, religious leaders and even social media followers. The tycoonโs close ties to Mnangagwa and the ruling ZANUโPF party made him a symbol of the small elite that many critics say benefits disproportionately from state deals while ordinary Zimbabweans earn less than USโฏ$5 a day.
Herbert Chivayo, the family spokesperson, told the national broadcaster ZBC that his 43โyearโold son and wife were โat a loss for wordsโ after the tragedy. President Mnangagwa said the sudden deaths left the nation, his family, and him โnumb and in deep shock and grief.โ The president posted a tribute the next day, praising the Chivayo familyโs philanthropy and their work on rural development projects. Kenyan President William Ruto, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, and Eswatiniโs King Mswati III also posted condolences online. Police are conducting DNA tests and other checks to confirm the identities of the victims, whose remains were burned in a fire at the crash site.
The incident highlights safety concerns for highโprofile travel in Zimbabwe and the concentration of wealth among a handful of business leaders. Investigations are underway, and the government has called for a thorough review of aviation safety standards. The loss of Chivayo and his wife could affect ongoing rural development initiatives and the political alliances that have shaped Zimbabweโs recent economic policies. The tragedy underscores the fragile nature of the countryโs elite network and raises questions about how such projects will proceed without their influential patron.
