Perplexity today launched hybrid compute for its agentic AI platform, allowing sensitive data to stay on the userโ€™s device while still tapping into powerful cloud-based models. The feature, called Computer, lets a single AI agent split tasks between cloud-based frontier models and smaller open-weight models running locally on Apple silicon Macs. Sensitive parts of a task are processed on the userโ€™s machine, keeping confidential data off the cloud entirely.

The move comes as privacy concerns around AI services grow, with many users and businesses wary of sending sensitive information to external servers. Perplexity says this is the first time an AI agent can start a task in the cloud and dynamically hand off confidential portions to a local model without restarting or losing context. The hybrid approach aims to balance performance with privacy, ensuring high-accuracy results even for sensitive work.

The feature is available today through Perplexityโ€™s desktop app for enterprise customers who opt in, as well as Pro and Max subscribers, on any Apple silicon Mac running macOS 15 or later. Jon Staff, who leads Perplexityโ€™s macOS and iOS engineering teams, called hybrid compute "really compelling" because "it's often the work that requires confidentiality that is the most important to get right." The company says this could be a game-changer for industries like healthcare, law, and finance, where data sensitivity is critical.

By keeping sensitive data local while still leveraging cloud-based AI for complex reasoning, Perplexity is betting that hybrid compute will become the standard for enterprise and power users. The move also puts pressure on competitors to offer similar privacy-focused solutions, especially as regulations around data handling tighten. If successful, this could shift how businesses and individuals use AI, making security a key selling point rather than an afterthought.
