JPYC, a Japanese yenโ€‘pegged stablecoin, closed a Seriesโ€ฏB round that raised $38โ€ฏmillion, according to CoinTelegraph. The funding round was led by a mix of venture capital firms and strategic investors, including a Japanese bank that has been exploring digital assets for years. The capital will be used to expand the companyโ€™s financial services and Web3 ecosystem, and to push the adoption of the token across payment and settlement platforms in Japan and abroad.

The stablecoin has been a key player in Japanโ€™s growing interestโ€‘rateโ€‘free, lowโ€‘volatility digital currency space. Since its launch in 2021, JPYC has partnered with several fintech firms and payment processors to offer instant, crossโ€‘border transfers that avoid the volatility of Bitcoin or Ethereum. Japanโ€™s regulatory environment has been increasingly supportive of stablecoins, with the Financial Services Agency issuing guidelines that clarify how such tokens can be used in retail and institutional contexts. JPYCโ€™s growth has also been driven by a broader push from the Japanese government to position Tokyo as a hub for digital finance.

In the past year, JPYCโ€™s trading volume has surged, reaching an allโ€‘time high of roughly 10โ€ฏbillion yen in daily transactions. The companyโ€™s team said it will use the new capital to build out a broader suite of financial products, such as lending and insurance, that can be underwritten by the stablecoin. They also plan to enhance interoperability with other blockchains, making it easier for businesses to swap JPYC for other digital assets. The roundโ€™s investors highlighted the need for more robust liquidity pools, especially in a market where Japanese yen is still the dominant fiat currency in Asian digital payments.

Looking ahead, JPYC aims to roll out its โ€œJPYC Payโ€ service by the end of the year, allowing merchants to accept the stablecoin as a payment method without converting to fiat. The company also plans to launch a crossโ€‘border settlement platform that could reduce transfer times from days to minutes. If successful, the new tools could help Japanese exporters and importers bypass traditional correspondent banks and lower transaction costs. The $38โ€ฏmillion infusion signals confidence that stablecoins can play a practical role in everyday commerce, not just speculative trading, and may spur further investment in Japanโ€™s digitalโ€‘currency ecosystem.
