A Tennessee police department says a McDonaldโ€™s employee in the town of Sevierville pulled a knife on a woman in the driveโ€‘thru on Tuesday after she asked to speak with a manager, then shouted โ€œgo and die, fat bโ€”.โ€ The employee allegedly waved the blade at the customer before police arrived and took the worker into custody.

The incident comes amid a national rise in workplace violence reports, especially in fastโ€‘food restaurants that see high volumes of customers and lowโ€‘pay staff. In 2023, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics recorded a 12โ€ฏpercent increase in assaults on retail workers, and several highโ€‘profile fastโ€‘food altercations have been captured on social media this year. The Sevierville case drew immediate attention because a video of the confrontation spread online, prompting public outcry and renewed scrutiny of employee training and security measures in quickโ€‘service venues.

Police say the suspect, a 28โ€‘yearโ€‘old male, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and is being held without bail. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses. McDonaldโ€™s corporate issued a statement saying it โ€œtakes any threat to the safety of our guests and team members seriouslyโ€ and that the franchise will cooperate fully with the investigation. The woman, who declined to give her name, told investigators she felt โ€œterrifiedโ€ and that the employeeโ€™s language was โ€œdegrading and abusive.โ€ No injuries were reported, but the woman said she left the driveโ€‘thru shaken.

The case will now move through the county court system, where prosecutors could file additional charges if evidence shows the employee acted with intent to intimidate. McDonaldโ€™s has pledged to review its hiring and training protocols at the Sevierville location and to increase onโ€‘site security where needed. The episode underscores the broader challenge of protecting customers and staff in highโ€‘traffic food service settings, and it may prompt other chains to reassess how they handle confrontations before they escalate.
