The WNBA’s commissioner, Cathy Engelbert, said Friday the league will form a task force to discuss whether transgender athletes should be allowed to compete in women’s sports, starting with a meeting next week.

The announcement follows months of debate inside and outside women’s sports over fairness, inclusion, and the rules governing transgender participation. The WNBA has long been a leader in social issues, but the league has not set a formal policy on transgender athletes. Engelbert’s memo signals the league is now moving deliberately toward one.

The task force will include team presidents and general managers, a group that already meets regularly. They will review existing rules, hear from medical and legal experts, and consider input from players, coaches, and fans. There is no public timeline for when the league might adopt new guidelines, but Engelbert’s move suggests a cautious, data-driven approach rather than a quick policy change.

The question of transgender athlete participation has divided sports organizations worldwide. USA Swimming, World Athletics, and FINA have all restricted trans women from elite competition, citing concerns over competitive fairness. The WNBA’s task force will have to weigh similar issues—safety, opportunity, and the meaning of “women’s sports”—while balancing the league’s stated commitment to inclusion. Whatever the outcome, the decision will shape not only the WNBA but also the broader conversation about gender, sport, and who gets to compete.
