NASA designates 2026 aerospace events as Widely Attended Gatherings for safety.

NASA announced that a series of high‑profile aerospace gatherings held across the United States in the summer of 2026 have been officially classified as Widely Attended Gatherings (WAGs) under its new attendance guidelines. The list includes the NAHF Enshrinement Ceremony on Sept. 24, the “Evening with the Stars” event on Sept. 16, the Maryland Space Business Roundtable on Sept. 9, and the Virginia Aerospace Business Association Gala on Sept. 24, alongside the Roman Space Telescope symposium on Aug. 28 and the Planetary Society’s “Celebrating Viking” celebration on July 20.

The designation comes as NASA tightens its public‑event protocols after a surge in large‑scale aerospace conferences and exhibitions. Earlier this year the agency introduced the WAG framework to ensure consistent safety, security, and outreach standards for events that draw more than a set number of participants. With the sector’s rapid growth and heightened public interest in space missions, officials say the new criteria help coordinate resources and protect both attendees and critical infrastructure.

The events flagged as WAGs span a range of formats, from industry roundtables to public exhibitions. The Farnborough Airshow activities on July 18‑19, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s Blue Origin showcase on July 14, and the University of Maryland’s Acres symposium on the same day also meet the threshold. Each gathering recorded attendance figures well above the 5,000‑person benchmark set by NASA, with the airshow drawing over 30,000 visitors and the roundtables attracting several thousand professionals and enthusiasts.

NASA says the WAG determinations will guide future collaboration between federal agencies, venue operators, and event sponsors. Organizers will receive a checklist covering crowd‑control plans, emergency‑response coordination, and public‑information protocols. The agency plans to review the list annually and may expand the criteria to include virtual‑attendance metrics as hybrid events become more common. Stakeholders view the move as a step toward safer, more transparent large‑scale aerospace gatherings while still encouraging public enthusiasm for space exploration.
