Flaco the Eurasian Eagle Owlโ€™s 2023 escape from New Yorkโ€™s Central Park Zoo sparked a year of viral fascinationโ€”and fierce debateโ€”that now comes under fresh scrutiny in the documentary *Wild Inside*.

The film revisits the emotional split that erupted after the owl went missing last February. Some hailed Flaco as a survivor who thrived in the wild, while others argued he was an outsider whose presence threatened local wildlife. โ€œPeople were really torn apart by this in a way Iโ€™ve never seen in the birding community,โ€ says Penny Lane, the director. โ€œFriendships fell apart over this.โ€

Flaco was born in captivity and never learned to hunt. Yet within weeks he was catching rats and pigeons in Central Park, becoming a social media icon. The zoo stopped search efforts after two weeks, and city officials declared the owl a symbol of resilience. โ€œIf you can make it here, you can make it anywhere,โ€ one newscaster said in the documentary, echoing public support for the underdog bird.

But critics questioned whether celebrating Flacoโ€™s freedom was justified. Eurasian Eagle Owls are apex predators not native to New York, and some ecologists warned Flaco could harm the delicate park ecosystem. Others argued he faced deadly threats like poisoned prey and urban hazards. โ€œFlaco was an unprepared individual thrown into one of the worldโ€™s most complex and dangerous environments,โ€ says Daniel Cone of the World Bird Sanctuary. The film asks tough questions: Did we project human emotions onto a bird that couldnโ€™t survive on its own? And did our love for Flaco blind us to the risks he faced?
