Clacton voters head to the polls today in a by-election triggered by Nigel Farageโ€™s resignation from Parliament. The Essex seat, which includes coastal towns like Walton-on-the-Naze and farming villages, faces its sixth general election or by-election in twelve years. Reform UK insists Farage left to let voters judge him, not because of the ongoing finance investigation.

The constituency stretches beyond its namesake town, covering farmland, seaside resorts and commuter villages where families from east London have settled. Many moved for cheaper housing and quieter lives, bringing their cultureโ€”and their frustrations. Healthcare, immigration and small-business costs dominate conversations on doorsteps and in cafes. Debbie Parmenter, who moved from Hornchurch last month, recalls waiting seven hours on a hospital corridor before being seen. โ€œThey were completely overwhelmed,โ€ she says. Her son Nick adds, โ€œWait times are huge, so Iโ€™d rather they spend money fixing the NHS.โ€

Immigration is also a top concern. Pete Parmenter says heโ€™s not calling for mass deportations, but wants tighter controls. Nearby taxi driver Clyde Ellis-Hall agrees. โ€œI want Britain to be Britain,โ€ he says, echoing worries that cities like London have changed beyond recognition. Small businesses feel the pinch too. Glenn White has run his pie-and-mash shop since 1981 and says VAT at 20% makes survival tough. โ€œThe government takes over ยฃ1 in tax on a cheap meal,โ€ he says. He wants VAT cuts to help businesses like his.

With the largest ballot paper in British electoral historyโ€”over a dozen candidatesโ€”the result could reshape Reform UKโ€™s momentum after Farageโ€™s abrupt exit. A strong showing might signal whether voters still back his brand of politics, even without him on the ticket. For locals, the outcome will hinge on whether any candidate can ease the pressures of daily life: shorter NHS waits, clearer immigration rules and lighter tax burdens for small shops.
