President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping ended their twoโ€‘day summit at the White House on Tuesday, calling the talks โ€œproductiveโ€ and โ€œsubstantive.โ€ The leaders did not release any agreements, and the press was left with only broad statements. Trump said the meeting was โ€œgreat for both countries,โ€ while Xi described it as โ€œsubstantive.โ€ The summit took place in the early months of 2024, amid a tense trade relationship and rising geopolitical friction.

The summit had low expectations. Analysts had predicted a quiet meeting that would not produce new trade deals. Instead, the two leaders announced a brief extension of the U.S. trade truce with China, pushing the deadline to the end of the year. Trump also hinted that Beijing might honor its promise to buy more U.S. farm products, a nod to farmers who have long complained about Chinese tariffs. The leaders agreed to meet again in November at the APEC conference in China and in December for the G20 summit in Miami, suggesting a desire to keep diplomatic channels open.

Trumpโ€™s hosting style was extravagant. He met Xi on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews and hosted a lavish state dinner. The White Houseโ€™s hospitality was seen by some as a way to soften the image of the U.S. toward a rival nation. Julian Gewirtz, a former National Security Council adviser on China, said that while Xi is unlikely to declare the United States a friend, a form of diplomacy that buys time can reduce tensions. He added that the trade truce is a pause, not a breakthrough. During the year of the truce, the Trump administration shifted focus away from China, engaging in a war of choice with Iran that drove up global oil and gas prices. The administrationโ€™s rhetoric framed China as a potential nuclear threat, a narrative that may have shaped the tone of the summit.

Looking ahead, the upcoming APEC and G20 meetings could either deepen the diplomatic pause or expose new frictions. The U.S. will have to decide how it uses the time bought by the trade truce. If Washington pushes for more concessions from Beijing, the trade deal could break down again. If it focuses on other global issues, it may maintain the status quo. The summitโ€™s real impact remains uncertain, but it underscores the United Statesโ€™ ongoing struggle to balance competition with China while managing domestic economic interests.
