A 350-square-foot tiny home on wheels left the foothills of the Sierra Nevada in California on Monday and arrived in Bend, Oregon, on Wednesday, completing a 600-mile trip that tested both the homeโ€™s roadworthiness and the crewโ€™s patience.

The relocation matters because it highlights a growing trend: remote workers and retirees are fleeing Californiaโ€™s high housing costs by buying tiny homes and parking them in lower-cost states. Bendโ€™s housing market is half as expensive as the Bay Areaโ€™s, and Oregon has no sales tax, making it an attractive destination. The tiny homeโ€™s builder, who asked not to be named, said the move was partly an experimentโ€”could a mobile tiny home survive a long highway haul without structural damage?

The journey wasnโ€™t smooth. At one point, the homeโ€™s tongue jackโ€”a hitch componentโ€”sheared off on Interstate 5, forcing a 24-hour roadside repair. Crews also had to reroute around Portlandโ€™s traffic and negotiate mountain passes still dusted with snow. Yet the home arrived with only minor cosmetic scrapes and intact plumbing. Insurance data shows that roughly 1 in 20 tiny home relocations over 300 miles experience a mechanical failure, but most are minor.

Next, the owners plan to live in the home full-time while renting out their previous house in California. Theyโ€™re also documenting the move online, hoping to attract buyers for similar relocations. The trend could grow: U-Haul reports a 30% jump in outbound moves from California to Oregon over the past two years, and tiny home listings on Zillow have risen 18% nationwide since 2022. The tiny homeโ€™s safe arrival proves the model worksโ€”at least on this route.
