Valve has pushed a fresh update to SteamOS that improves support for a handful of non-Valve handhelds and mini PCs, including the Intel-based MSI Claw 8 EX AI+.

The tweak comes as Valve quietly widens SteamOS beyond its own Steam Deck hardware, testing how the Linux-based system runs on rival devices. Behind the scenes, Valve has been shipping small batches of SteamOS images to partners and indie makers, often with caveats about stability and driver gaps. The latest build adds better touchscreen controls, improved power management and a handful of hardware-specific tweaks aimed at making SteamOS feel like a first-class option on third-party gear.

Details from the changelog point to fixes for suspend/resume on the MSI Claw, better Intel Arc GPU detection and updated firmware handling for a handful of Aya Neo handhelds. Valve isnโ€™t calling the update official, and the company still warns users that out-of-tree drivers or custom kernels may still be needed on some machines. Community reports on forums such as Reddit and Steamโ€™s own hardware boards suggest the changes are noticeable but still uneven; a few users report near-Seam Deck performance, while others hit stuttering or audio glitches under load.

The move fits a broader push to keep SteamOS relevant as Windows gaming laptops and handhelds crowd the market. Valve has said little publicly, but the incremental updates suggest it is still treating SteamOS as a strategic hedgeโ€”both to keep hardware partners honest and to give PC gamers another lightweight OS option. Expect more small, device-specific builds in the coming months, with no guarantee that any single piece of hardware will ever get full Valve certification.
