United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned both Russia and Ukraine, calling for urgent de-escalation and a permanent ceasefire as attacks intensify. The UN chief’s unusually balanced criticism comes after Ukraine launched drone strikes on Wildberries warehouses inside Russia, damaging civilian infrastructure and raising fears of further escalation.

The timing reflects a dangerous new phase in the war. Ukraine has stepped up cross-border strikes in recent months, targeting logistics hubs used by Russian forces and businesses accused of supplying the war effort. Russia has responded with heavier bombardment of Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, including energy facilities. Guterres’ statement signals growing global alarm that the conflict is spiraling beyond the battlefield into broader economic and humanitarian harm. It also reflects frustration at both sides for failing to engage in serious peace talks despite mounting civilian casualties and economic strain.

Ukraine’s strikes on Wildberries—a major Russian online retailer—mark a shift in strategy. Ukrainian officials say the company has deep ties to Russian elites and has been used to fund military operations. Russian authorities deny this but have accused Ukraine of deliberately targeting civilian sites. The UN says at least 12 people were injured in the latest attacks, and thousands remain displaced across both countries.

What happens next could determine whether the war widens further. Guterres is expected to push for a UN-brokered pause in fighting, but neither Moscow nor Kyiv has shown willingness to stop operations. Russia may escalate its own strikes to deter future cross-border attacks. Meanwhile, Western allies are under pressure to provide more air-defense systems to Ukraine, which could prolong the conflict. The UN’s call is a reminder that without real diplomacy, the humanitarian cost will keep rising.
