Connacht ended Ulster’s hopes of a perfect start to the Interprovincial Championship with a gritty 15-10 victory in Saturday’s opening round at Affidea Stadium in Tuam. The western province scored 10 unanswered points in the second half to seal their first win over Ulster in three years. It was a bruising contest, with both teams playing in heavy rain that turned the pitch into a mud bath and made handling a constant challenge.

This defeat matters because Ulster had been tipped as early favourites after beating Leinster and Munster in the same competition last year. Connacht, meanwhile, arrived off the back of a mixed start to their United Rugby Championship campaign, needing a morale boost. The provinces’ rivalry is fierce but rarely decisive in the bigger picture; Ulster still lead the overall standings with three titles in the last four years. Yet Saturday’s result shows that the gap between the top two Irish provinces is shrinking, especially away from home.

The turning point came in the 52nd minute when Connacht’s out-half Ciarán Murtagh split the Ulster defence to set up centre Tom Daly for the first try. From there, Connacht’s pack wrestled control, with flanker Jordan Duggan winning breakdown after breakdown. Ulster’s attack, led by captain Nick Timoney, looked sharp early but could not keep possession in the wet. Their only points came from a Rory Telfer penalty and a late Johnny Stewart try that was too little, too late. Connacht’s defence held firm, with full-back Shane O’Leary making crucial tackles under the high ball.

The loss leaves Ulster needing to bounce back quickly when they face Leinster next weekend in Dublin. Connacht, meanwhile, will be buoyed by a performance that proves they can compete with anyone in Ireland. The Interpro is no longer a one-horse race, and that’s good news for Irish rugby. The championship still has four rounds to go, but the first weekend delivered a clear message: the provinces are leveling up.
