Russian missile strikes on the northern Ukrainian city of Sumy injured at least five civilians overnight, regional governor Oleh Hryhorov said on Telegram on Monday. The attack damaged multiple residential areas, underscoring the persistent threat to civilians as Russia continues its two-year invasion. Sumy, near the Russian border, has faced frequent shelling since Moscow widened its bombardment to include deeper strikes inside Ukraine.

The strikes mark the latest escalation in Russia’s campaign to degrade Ukraine’s infrastructure and morale. Sumy has been a repeated target because of its strategic location and proximity to Russian supply lines. Ukrainian officials say Moscow is trying to disrupt civilian life, cut off energy supplies, and force Kyiv to divert troops from frontline defenses. The overnight attack comes just days after Ukraine said it intercepted dozens of drones and missiles aimed at cities across the country.

At least five people were wounded, according to Hryhorov. Emergency services reported damage to homes, power lines, and local businesses. No fatalities were reported, but officials warned the toll could rise as crews assess the full extent of the damage. Social media footage showed shattered windows, debris-strewn streets, and firefighters responding to blazes in apartment blocks.

Ukraine’s air force said it destroyed 12 of 20 incoming missiles and 24 of 29 drones launched overnight. The strikes follow a pattern of intensified Russian attacks on energy and residential sites, likely aimed at breaking public support for the war. Analysts say Moscow is trying to exhaust Ukraine’s air defenses ahead of a potential new offensive. Meanwhile, Sumy residents are bracing for more violence as winter sets in and temperatures drop, raising fears over heating shortages and power cuts. The city’s mayor has urged people to stay in shelters and prepare for prolonged attacks.
