The average price of diesel in the United Kingdom has officially surpassed two pounds per litre for the first time in history, marking a significant and painful milestone for motorists and businesses alike. The RAC motoring group confirmed that the average price hit 200.01p on Friday, effectively breaking a psychological barrier that many had feared would remain unbroken. Petrol prices are not far behind, with the national average climbing to 174.71p per litre. These figures represent a sustained upward trend that has left drivers with little room for relief. The RAC described the situation as showing no signs of slowing down, noting that the rising costs are heaping additional misery onto a public already struggling with the broader cost of living crisis. This is not just a temporary spike but a structural shift in fuel pricing that is reshaping household budgets and corporate operating costs across the country.

The surge in fuel prices is driven by a perfect storm of geopolitical conflicts and supply chain disruptions that have persisted for over seven months. The ongoing war in Iran has severely disrupted the production and transportation of wholesale oil and refined products from the region, causing global prices to skyrocket. Compounding this issue, Ukrainian military actions have targeted Russian refineries, further constraining the global supply of diesel. Additionally, China has restricted its exports of refined fuels, tightening an already fragile market. In response to these escalating tensions, G7 nations met urgently on Friday to agree on releasing 100 million barrels of oil from strategic reserves. This coordinated effort aims to head off further price increases and stabilize global markets. The G7 also agreed that member countries would not impose export restrictions on one another, a move designed to counter threats from US President Donald Trump to ban shipments of American diesel overseas. Such a ban would have exacerbated global prices, though it might have temporarily eased pressure on US consumers ahead of the November midterm elections.

The impact of these price hikes is being felt widely, extending far beyond individual car owners. RAC policy head Simon Williams emphasized that crossing the two-pound mark is a threshold no one wanted to reach, warning of severe challenges for high-mileage users. This includes commuters, haulage firms, delivery companies, and sole traders who rely heavily on diesel vehicles. The ripple effects are reaching sectors that do not directly use diesel, such as agriculture and food production. Mark Means, a farmer in Norfolk with over 50 years of experience, described the situation as an assault on his livelihood. He has already spent 50,000 pounds on new diesel tanks to ensure sufficient supply for planting and harvesting, but the rising costs are eroding his margins. Similarly, Steven Tompkins, a driving instructor in Leicester, is forced to increase his rates to cover fuel expenses. This puts additional strain on students, many of whom are part-time workers on tight budgets. The government has attempted to reassure the public, stating that the UK has a diverse and resilient supply chain. Ministers highlighted that over half of UK diesel is imported, with less than a third coming from the US, and stressed that there is no cause for concern regarding potential shortages. However, for many on the ground, the financial strain is immediate and undeniable.
