David Owori murdered in Kampala, following Sydney Gongodyo's death

Ugandan football star David Owori, captain of the record-breaking SC Villa, was killed in an assault in Kampala on Tuesday. The 28-year-old was critically injured by unidentified assailants in a suburb and later died in the hospital, according to police spokesperson Racheal Kawala.

This tragic incident comes just weeks after the death of rugby player Sydney Gongodyo, who was killed in a mob attack in Kampala. Owori’s murder has intensified concerns about rising crime in Uganda’s capital, leading to outrage among fans and citizens alike. Many took to social media to express their anger, blaming the government for failing to address escalating violence in the city.

Owori was discovered unconscious by passers-by who rushed him to a nearby hospital. He was subsequently transferred to another medical facility, where he was pronounced dead. The Federation of Uganda Football Associations paid tribute to him, stating, “David was not just a footballer. He was both a leader and an inspiration to a generation.” SC Villa recently ended a 20-year wait for the Uganda league title under his captaincy, marking their 17th league crown.

In light of these events, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa urged authorities to confront the broader security challenges facing the country. The National Council of Sports Uganda echoed this sentiment, lamenting the recent tragedies in Ugandan sports and calling for justice and effective solutions. The deaths of Owori and Gongodyo highlight a worrying trend that threatens not only the sports community but also public safety in Uganda.
