Uber Japan and Hinomaru Kotsu launch robotaxi pilot in Tokyo, 2026

Uber Technologies has partnered with Hinomaru Kotsu Co., Ltd. to launch a robotaxi pilot program in Tokyo, set to begin in late 2026. This agreement was announced on Thursday and marks a significant step for Uber's autonomous vehicle initiatives in Japan. Hinomaru Kotsu will oversee daily fleet operations, including vehicle maintenance and inspections, while Uber will handle ride availability through its app.

This partnership comes on the heels of a Memorandum of Understanding signed in March between Uber, Wayve, and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. The goal is to create a seamless experience for riders, integrating robotaxis into everyday transportation. The pilot will utilize Nissan LEAF cars outfitted with Wayve's AI Driver technology, aiming to make autonomous rides a common option for commuters.

Safety is a key focus of the pilot. Under Japanese regulations, only authorized taxi companies can offer passenger transport services. Initially, experienced Hinomaru Kotsu drivers will be present in the vehicles to monitor operations and ensure safety as the program rolls out. This phased approach is designed to build trust and reliability in autonomous services before fully driverless operations are introduced.

This initiative is part of a broader movement towards autonomous vehicles in urban centers. With Uber's stock closing at $75.36 on Wednesday, down 4.05%, the company is betting on the future of robotaxis despite current market fluctuations. The success of this pilot could influence the expansion of similar projects in other cities and reshape the landscape of urban transportation.
