Former Trump White House lawyer Ty Cobb said acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has shown โ€œtotal fealtyโ€ to President Trump in a weekend interview, raising fresh questions about the Justice Departmentโ€™s independence under Trumpโ€™s potential return to power.

Cobb, who worked in Trumpโ€™s White House counselโ€™s office during the final stretch of the 2020 election and Trumpโ€™s first impeachment, made the comment Saturday on โ€œMehdi Unfilteredโ€ on Zeteo. His remarks come as Trump ramps up rhetoric about using the Justice Department against political opponents if reelected. Trump has repeatedly said he would direct federal prosecutors to investigate his rivals, including President Biden, and has suggested he would use the DOJ to โ€œroot outโ€ perceived corruption in his administrationโ€™s critics. Blanche, a former federal prosecutor and Trump White House lawyer, took over as acting attorney general in February following the resignation of Matthew Colangelo.

Legal experts and Democrats have warned that Trumpโ€™s promises to weaponize the DOJ threaten the departmentโ€™s neutrality. Cobbโ€™s endorsement of Blancheโ€™s loyalty underscores how Trumpโ€™s allies view the department less as an independent institution and more as a tool to be deployed. Trump has already signaled plans to replace or sideline DOJ leaders seen as insufficiently loyal, including potential moves against current Attorney General Merrick Garland or other senior officials. Blancheโ€™s backgroundโ€”he previously worked in Trumpโ€™s White House and defended the former president during his first impeachmentโ€”has fueled concerns that he would act at Trumpโ€™s behest rather than as an independent law enforcement official.

If Trump wins in November, Blancheโ€™s role could become even more pivotal. His actions as acting attorney general may set the tone for how aggressively the DOJ pursues Trumpโ€™s agenda. Civil liberties groups and Democrats have vowed to challenge any politicized use of prosecutorial power, setting up potential legal and political battles ahead. The pressure on Blancheโ€”and the broader Justice Departmentโ€”highlights a growing constitutional crisis over whether federal law enforcement can remain nonpartisan in the face of a president openly seeking to weaponize it.
