The number of writers working in film and television has dropped significantly, according to the latest data from the Writers Guild of America West (WGA West). In 2025, 27% fewer members reported any earnings compared to the peak employment levels seen just three years earlier. Approximately 5,072 writers had earnings reported to the guild last year, down from nearly 7,000 in 2022.

This decline reflects broader challenges in the industry, particularly the impact of streaming platforms and their evolving business models. Over the past decade, many traditional networks faced declining viewership while streaming services surged. This change has led to a shift in how content is produced and consumed, often favoring shorter, more cost-effective productions. As a result, the demand for traditional writing jobs has diminished, affecting the livelihoods of many screenwriters.

The decrease in jobs has raised concerns among industry professionals about the future of storytelling in film and television. Many writers have expressed frustration over fewer opportunities and lower pay rates. The landscape is increasingly competitive, with many projects relying on established writers and franchises rather than nurturing new talent. This has created a cycle where fewer jobs lead to less diversity in storytelling and reduced innovation in content.

Looking ahead, the industry may need to adapt to its changing landscape. Writers are expected to continue advocating for better working conditions and fair pay, especially as more writers enter the market from diverse backgrounds. The ongoing negotiations between writers and studios will be crucial in determining how the industry evolves. The outcome will significantly impact not just the writers but also the quality and variety of content available to audiences in the future.
