Trump Latino support dips below 40% in swing states

Trumpโ€™s share of the Latino vote fell in recent polls, leaving Democrats ahead as the midโ€‘term election approaches. In a series of surveys released last week, Latino voters in key swing states such as Texas, Florida and Arizona gave the Republican president lower marks for the economy and for his approach to immigration enforcement, pushing his support below 40% in those markets.

The shift comes after a year of economic uncertainty and a surge of immigrationโ€‘related headlines. The U.S. economy slowed in 2023, with unemployment rising to 4.6% and inflation easing only marginally. Many Latino voters, especially in border states, have felt the impact of higher food and gas prices. At the same time, Trumpโ€™s hardโ€‘line stance on immigrationโ€”highlighted by the โ€œzeroโ€‘toleranceโ€ policy that led to family separations in 2018โ€”has been criticized by community leaders and faith groups across the country. The new polls reflect growing fatigue with that rhetoric, as well as increased turnout among younger Latino voters who favor Democratic candidates.

Democrats are capitalising on the trend. Party officials say the current numbers signal a chance to win states that have historically leaned Republican but have a large Latino electorate. โ€œThe data shows that Latino voters are listening to candidates who promise comprehensive immigration reform and economic relief,โ€ said a senior adviser to the Democratic National Committee. Republicans, meanwhile, are scrambling to reโ€‘brand Trumpโ€™s image, focusing on job creation and border security while trying to distance themselves from the most controversial aspects of his administration. The next few weeks will see both parties ramp up outreach in Latino communities, with townโ€‘halls, bilingual media campaigns and visits from highโ€‘profile candidates.

If the trend holds, it could reshape the midโ€‘term landscape. Winning a handful of states with large Latino populations could give Democrats a margin in the House and Senate that was previously uncertain. The polls also hint at a potential shift in the Republican primary, as Trump faces challengers who promise a more moderate stance on immigration. With the election only six months away, both parties will need to decide how to mobilise Latino voters and whether the current polls represent a lasting swing or a temporary dip in Trumpโ€™s support.
