The Trump administration revoked more than 175,000 visas on Monday, saying foreign nationals had broken the terms of their entry by committing crimes or calling for violence against Americans. The State Department called the cancellations part of a broader crackdown on public safety threats.

Officials said most of the revocations followed โ€œlaw enforcement encounters,โ€ including arrests or charges for offenses from drug trafficking to assault. The move fits a pattern of stricter immigration enforcement under the Trump administration, which has emphasized border security and deportation of those who overstay visas or violate rules. Critics warn the policy risks unfairly targeting immigrants without due process.

The administration did not provide a full breakdown of the revocations, but said reasons ranged from felony convictions to social media posts that praised violence. At least 20,000 of the visas had already expired, meaning the cancellations were largely symbolic. Still, immigrant rights groups say the policy creates uncertainty for families and workers already in the U.S.

Homeland Security officials said they would continue reviewing visa files and revoke more documents if violations are found. The move is expected to face legal challenges from groups arguing it overreaches federal authority. For now, thousands of immigrantsโ€”some longtime residentsโ€”must leave the country or face deportation if they stay.
