The Supreme Court is set to hear a second appeal from the Trump administration seeking to enforce a new USPS rule on mailโ€‘in ballots that a lower court had blocked. The rule requires the Postal Service to verify a voterโ€™s identity before accepting their ballot, a measure the administration says is constitutional because it only regulates mail, not elections.

The rule was issued in 2023 amid concerns about mailโ€‘ballot fraud. Critics argue it could delay delivery, especially for seniors and rural voters. A district judge ruled the rule unconstitutional, saying it infringes on voting rights. The Trump administration calls that ruling โ€œbaselessโ€ and says the rule is a legitimate security measure.

Democratic lawmakers and votingโ€‘rights groups say the rule could suppress turnout. They point to the risk of delayed ballots and the potential for disenfranchisement. Republicans defend the rule as a necessary safeguard against fraud. The case now sits on the Supreme Court docket, where it will be reviewed in late spring.

The Courtโ€™s decision will determine whether the USPS can enforce the rule before the midterm election. If it grants a stay, the rule could take effect and affect ballot processing. If it upholds the lower court, the rule remains blocked. Either outcome will shape how mail ballots are handled in future elections.
