At least 18 people, many of them children, died in a tragic truck crash in Egypt on Tuesday. The accident occurred on a link road in the Al-Dawawis area of Ismailia governorate. The vehicle was carrying agricultural laborers when it overturned, leading to a significant number of casualties.

This incident highlights ongoing issues with child labor in Egypt, where approximately 1.3 million minors are engaged in work, often in hazardous conditions. The workers involved primarily hailed from two villages in Sharqiya governorate and were en route to a farm in Ismailia. Tragically, most of the deceased were children aged 13 and 14, with the youngest victim being just 10 years old. The Ministry of Health reported a total of 47 casualties, including around 30 injuries, with victims transported to hospitals in the nearby town of El-Kassasin.

In response to the devastating accident, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has ordered an investigation into the crash. The Ministry of Social Solidarity and the Ministry of Labour have pledged financial assistance to the families of the deceased and to the injured workers. This commitment comes amid rising concerns about road safety in Egypt, where fatalities and injuries from traffic incidents have increased by more than 10 percent. Alarmingly, children under 15 years old are disproportionately affected, bearing the highest toll from these accidents.

The crash underscores the urgent need for improved safety measures for informal workers in Egypt, who frequently rely on pick-up trucks for transportation. As investigations proceed, this incident may prompt renewed discussions on the dangers of child labor and the necessity of stricter regulations to protect vulnerable populations in the country.
