Ursula von der Leyen announces enhanced EU border controls amid Ceuta migrant surge

The European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, warned that the EU will step up border controls in a speech to the European Parliament on Wednesday, citing the July raid on Ceuta where more than 10,000 people from Morocco crossed the Spanish enclave in two days. The statement comes as Washington threatens new tariffs on EU goods, while Russia continues to test Europe’s resolve over the Ukraine war and the planet’s warming crisis.

Von der Leyen’s remarks follow a growing sense among European citizens that external pressures are mounting.
