The California Teamsters union is suing several state agencies, including the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), over new regulations that facilitate the deployment of self-driving trucks. The lawsuit, reported by Politico, argues that these regulations, introduced by Governor Gavin Newsom's administration, could threaten approximately 400,000 jobs in the trucking industry.

The controversy began in April when the DMV adopted rules to allow testing of autonomous vehicles, including heavy-duty trucks. California had previously barred large self-driving vehicles due to concerns raised by labor unions about job security. The new framework aims to create a pathway for companies to introduce self-driving trucks on state roads, which the Teamsters contend could lead to significant job losses for both employed and self-employed drivers.

The lawsuit claims the DMV failed to conduct a necessary economic impact study before enacting the new regulations. Teamsters' attorney Julie Gutman Dickinson criticized the agency for not fully informing the public about the economic ramifications of the changes. "The DMV irresponsibly, carelessly, and unlawfully kept the public in the dark about the true economic and human costs," she stated. The union warns that the regulations could eliminate over 200,000 employed truck drivers and impact a similar number of independent drivers, posing an "existential threat" to the workforce.

As the U.S. autonomous vehicle trucking market is projected to reach $18 billion by 2030, the Teamsters are calling for the court to block the DMV from enforcing the new rules and to declare the regulations improperly implemented. Governor Newsom has historically supported the autonomous vehicle industry, vetoing labor-backed legislation aimed at limiting the technology's use in heavy trucks. The outcome of this lawsuit could shape the future of transportation in California and influence labor relations in the rapidly evolving autonomous vehicle sector.
